Barry Manilow at the peak of his career with a hit on the disco dance charts

Barry Manilow, EVEN NOW, Arista AB 4164 vinyl Lp. Vinyl Lp dates February, 1978.

There are two versions of this album, the original Lp from most of 1978 into 1979, which features the 4:08 album version of track one, side one, "Copacabana," and a reissued version sometime after November, 1978, which has the extended disco charts hit version clocking in at 5:46. Original versions of the album with the short version were pressed on Arista''s charcoal grey with silver printing record label; The album was a RIAA certified Gold Record Album (500,000 copies) on 2/15/78, and RIAA certified Platinum (1,000,000 copies) on 2/22/78. Effectively, Arista pressed and distributed over one million copies of the original version immediately after its release (initial chart date was 2/18/78 on Cash Box Pop Lp charts). Arista went back to the RIAA for 3x Platinum certification on 9/02/87, after Manilow returned to the label from his one album stiff on RCA, updating Manilow''s gold/platinum certifications for promotional purposes.

"Copacabana" 5:46 was initially released on a promo-only one-sided 12" disco single, SP-018, which charted on Billboard''s Dance charts beginning in mid-April, 1978, effectively the second single from the Lp (after "Can''t Smile Without You" on Arista 0305 45 single in early February). Arista released the second 7" 45 single, "Even Now," the title track (and Lp track one, side two) in May, Arista 0330, then a short version of "Copacabana" (3:48 on the A-side; 5:46 long disco hit on the B-side. The short A-side charted.) on Arista 0339, maybe three weeks later. "Even Now" topped quickly on the easy listening or A/C charts at #1; "Copacabana" (3:48) split the mainstream singles'' chart run with competing "Even Now" and spiked "Even Now" at #19 peak in late June, 1978, and "Copacabana" (3:48) then outperformed "Even Now" on its chart peak. Final hit single was a cover of Helen Reddy''s Capitol hit, "Somewhere In the Night," from November, 1975, on Arista 0382.

"Can''t Smile Without You" on Arista 0305 45 single was RIAA Gold (1,000,000 copies) on 4/06/78, some two months after release, and "Copacabana" on Arista 0339 45 single was RIAA Gold on 9/07/78.

The EVEN NOW vinyl Lp featured four singles (Arista slapped a promo sticker, "Featuring the Inevitable Classics," on the early version). Arista released BARRY MANILOW GREATEST HITS 2 Lp set, Arista 8601-2, in November, and that album included all four of EVEN NOW''s hit singles, albeit, the GREATEST HITS album featured the long 5:46 version of "Copacabana". Putting out a singles'' hits comp featuring a current chart album''s tracks is a great way to kill the catalog. Later pressings of the EVEN NOW album were pressed on a blue and beige colored vinyl Lp label, which began in November-December, 1978. The last Arista album featuring the charcoal grey/silver printing Lp label was Lou Reed''s TAKE NO PRISONERS Arista AL 8501 album. Blue label reissue copies of Manilow''s EVEN NOW Lp can feature either the original "Copacabana" album version (4:08), or the long disco-only hit (5:46) version. I find the short 4:08 version more "punchy" than the 5:46 version; Manilow''s vocals on the short version are more up in the mix, while the disco version mixes him down. The 5:46 disco version seems padded out with an extended percussion break that goes nowhere and seems to be laid on top of the original mix. Apparently you have to locate an original 1978 vinyl copy of the album (grey label/silver printing, one million-plus originally pressed in 1978) to get the 4:08 version. If buying the blue label reissue on vinyl Lp, check the running time printed on the label; either the original 4:08 or disco extended 5:46 versions seem equally available.

Apparently the CD incorporates the 5:46 disco version, not the 4:08 original mix.

This is not my favorite Barry CD. (I have a respectable collection.) This is a good CD, with 14 tracks, many I''ve never heard before. It has been digitally remastered from the original 1978 release. Song quality is great. Total album time is a wee bit over 48 minutes. There is a booklet included, with the words of most of the songs, so you can sing along if you want to.

There are classic versions of the Barry classics: "Copacabana" runs a tad shy of 6 minutes. The subtle-sexy "Somewhere in the Night" is included "..lovin'' so warm, movin'' so right, closin'' our eyes, and feelin'' the light.." (I LOVE that song). "Even Now" and "Can''t Smile Without You" are also included in their familiar versions.

"A Linda Song" and "No Love for Jenny" are not included on many albums, but are included here. They are good songs, just sad songs. I do like the beat in "Leavin'' in the Mornin''" even though that''s a bit sad too. "I Was a Fool to Let You Go" is kind of almost a blues. I like "I Just Want to be the One in Your Life" a lot. The others are all good songs: "Sunrise; I''m Comin'' Home Again; Where Do I Go From Here; and Losing Touch."

I love everything Barry does. With that said, the album is mainly "slow songs" and some of it is a bit sad for my taste. Not to say there is anything wrong with that. Some people need to sort of vent their own experiences through sad songs, so they can release the grief or sadness they are holding within themselves. Sad songs have a definitive purpose. You NEVER want to hold on to grief, anger, sadness, etc. They will make you ill.

With that said, for me, I prefer more upbeat songs overall, but this is still a great album.

When my Mom bought this album brand new back in 1978, it was played all the time in our house. I would forget the mellodies of Barry Manillow over time as I got to know other great artists. It is sad that he is so dated as only a hero of the New York City sound of the 1970s, and now an old crooner who no longer is on the Bilboard charts.
The songs are beautiful and magical especially Somewhere in the Night and Even Now as well as Starting Again plus Sunrise and Where Do I Go From Here as well as Losing Touch. I love the extended version of Copacabana {At The Copa} which is better than the original version. Yes I know that the original was special for so many, but this version I never heard, and it is GREAT. The haunting Linda Song is so typical the fractured fairy tale of a songwriter and the woman who he ignores, for so many artists struggle and starve, with love being lost on the way. I was a fool to let you go is a great tribute to the Jazz of Big Band. So classic New York City Piano Bar! I Cant Smile Without You is another great song about lost love and the same with the beautifully Rock driven Leaving in the Morning.
The album cover is so romantic and special for I love New York City so much and it gives a true romantic feel and capture of that skyline at sunset or sunrise and at dusk as well as nightime.
God bless you Barry as a true symbol of a time long gone when songwriters who knew what they were doing dominated the charts.

I love all of Barry Manilow''s Live CD''s, but if I had to pick a studio album, this is without a doubt his best. There are so many great songs on this CD. The big hits: Copacabana, Even Now, and Can''t Smile Without You. But there''s also some really good lessor known songs. Losing Touch and Starting Again are wonderful songs about loves that have gone bad . And I also love the song Sunrise, which is a relaxing song about someone looking over the ocean, watching the Sunrise, and glad to be alive.
